COLUMBIA NIGHTS: SOUND TRAVELER SERIES #2 MIX

"Every so often, we gather at BrotherSpanky's place with one purpose in mind: to absorb LP records. Along with a small group of friends, we fellowship over the history preserved in dusty grooves and liner notes. Usually these sessions become conversations about recording and musicianship that flow into the wee hours. As habit became tradition in our collective, the music shared during Vinyl Fridays began to influence our sound. We invite you to join us for a journey through wax, as we explore records from our personal collections that inspire us and have influenced our forthcoming work." -Columbia Nights

MR. THING: THE PORTABLE ANORAK MIX

Excellent mix of Soul & Jazz breaks/samples for the beat diggers and lovers of old school music. Here's the science: "UK’s Mr. Thing, formally from the Skratch Perverts, released this mix in 2008. Yeah I’m a little late on this but I figure, like me, most of ya’ll haven’t heard this mix yet. Those of you who are knowledgeable about Thing’s work know he has an incredible ear for good funky breaks and old time soul. I don’t know where he finds these usually unheard of joints but I just glad he finds them gives us all an opportunity to hear these gems.

There’s no tracklisting and it’s damn shame there isn’t one. That joint at the 15 minute mark..OMG! Incredible dope!

Throughout the mix you will hear various songs DJ Premier sampled. Which isn’t too surprising considering Thing & Primo collaborated on “Kings Of Hip Hop” a few years back. You’ll recognize samples for Jay Z’s “So Ghetto”(27 minute mark) , Nas,KRS One & Rakim’s”Classic” (29 minute mark) and a Gangstarr joint (30 minute mark) I forgot the name to."-EastofLA

MADLIB'S TRASH IS ANOTHER MAN'S TREASURE

The story, via LA Weekly, goes that someone comes across Madlib throwing out a box of 45s. The guy says, you don't want these? Madlib says, fuck it, done with them. So the guy takes the box out of the trash and gives them to his boy DJ EGROEG, who made this mix.

DJ JS-1: WIKIBREAKS MIXTAPE (B-BOY EDITION)

"Here’s another mix for everyone to enjoy…
The “WikiBreaks” mix is a lil’ over an hour of breaks from funk, disco, re-edits, and some hiphop tracks that are not the most popular. I made most of the mix using two turntables, and then added some scratches & phrases from movies, pop-culture, commercials, etc… As you download yet another free mixtape i give out, i do hope you realize and appreciate the value of a good mix. There is an over-abundance of wanna-be djays: posers, strippers, clowns, reality tv losers, athletes, d-list celebs, promoters, anyone with a laptop, and even the coat-check chick spins… With all these djays you would think there would be more incredible mixes to listen too, more than there was 15 years ago when there was less djays? Yet, there is not many today, but i have dozens of cassettes from the 90′s with great mixes. Perhaps it’s because even the djays capable of making great mixes, don’t really do that anymore. There’s very few. It takes more than just playing what people know and like, or playing some exclusive detox tracks that are HORRIBLE and no one gives a shit about anyway, or just scratching really fast, or just “mashing up” any two different songs, or having “catchy” artwork, or playing an electro song that sounds like its 98 minutes long, etc… It takes a whole lot, that apparently most djays lack, or are simply lazy and ONLY do dj for $ not for the love of what it means to be a DJ. So whenever any DJ puts together something that obviously took time and dedication, we should appreciate their effort to keep the true mixtape essence alive, although it’s all downloads and digital 1 & 0′s… I guess we can try to keep the quality on par while most fell off or missed the boat. “Tradition means that we need to end what began well and continue what is worth continuing…” Well, I’ll continue to keep making really dope mixes with good music, over here…"-DJ JS-1

MARSELLUS WALLACE: SHELF ARRANGEMENTS MIXTAPE

"This is my 2nd official mixtape. It's basically a mix of library, rock, and various breaks. It took me about 8 months to polish out. The big issue with this one was that I could not export the damn thing!!! Desperate measures had to be taken to actually save the whole project. That is when I called in my good friend and talented artist Xact One. Without him, this project would still be trapped in my computer. We worked day and night for 2 straight weeks battling this thing. So with that said, I proudly present "Shelf Arrangements"."-Marsellus Wallace

MR. THING: CHAMPION NERD MIXTAPE

"I basically did it as part of a series of mixes I did called the "anorak" (golden, platinum, portable as account of them being pretty nerdy), and after I'd run out of anoraks decided to call the new one "Champion Nerd". It's all samples and breaks from some of my favorite hip hop and r&b tunes from the last couple of years.

I can't really give out a tracklist due to the politics of sample clearance etc, but I'm working on the next one already!"
