ELLEN ALLIEN X THOMAS MULLER: FREE NATION (ELLEN ALLIEN EDIT)

 

Could Ellen Allien and Thomas Muller be crowned the new dream team of tech-house? In all modesty -- with their current collaboration and the resulting 12" Free Nation the two long-standing label colleagues have delivered four absolutely killer tracks. The basic framework initially came about in Ellen's living room. Ultimately the tracks were completed independently of one another in Berlin and Thomas' previous home city of Paris. It is remarkable how a common starting point can lead to such different results: the Grande Dame of tech-house has her puppets dancing with no inhibitions as she mixes freaky noises with deliciously overdriven Roland SH-101 synth lines in "Free Nation" and Jupiter 6 synth lines in Delta Zoo before launching an all-out assault on the ears with an explosive mixture of straight-up, bone-dry, old-school beats. This creates a sumptuous retro-techy sound that still throbs with the energy of the present day. Thomas also takes a very punchy approach to his edits of Free Nation and Delta Zoo. Contrary to Ellen, however, he often leaves space between the straight-up, bone-dry beats for trippy atmospherics and subtly dispersed house elements. These lend his tracks a certain laid-back elegance, but without diminishing their raw power in the slightest -- without doubt four genuine floor-fillers and an extremely promising artist liaison! GAYLE SAN: LIVE DJ MIX 10/4/2011

Gayle Sans career already began in the early 90´s in her hometown Singapore. She started as a warmup DJ for Bands such as Kool and the Gang Earth Wind and Fire and the Commodores,in the Top ten club which was the club of that moment on that island. Leaving her native Singapore in 1988,to pursue her dj career in the UK, nobody expected such a massive success for Gayle in the music business. Gayle's first steps into the London clubs were via DJing at record company parties, various one-off guest spots and fashion shows. These slots soon led to Gayle being made resident at 'Reach for the Sky' at London's Limelight club, where she played alongside global DJs which Gayle describes as "the steepest learning curve possible". Having honed her DJing skills and broadened her understanding of music, Gayle began to experiment with the harder side of dance music, particularly the lesser known techno sounds coming into Britain from Europe and the US of that time.

ESTHER DUIJN: AND IT STARTED WITH A BEAT

Esther Duijn has always been involved in house and techno music. As a dj for over a decade and as a producer for the last four years. She creates music alone and together with her partner in crime Steady Douglas as ‘Duijn&Douglas’. Also she collaborates with Campati as ‘Campati & Esther Duijn’ and was involved with the project ‘D.A.D’ together with Anonym & Steady Douglas.

Duijn&Douglas & Esther Duijn have released at least ten EP’s and remixes on vinyl & digital labels worldwide. Their tracks have stirred up the dance floors and tracks like ‘Track 1 / Zuidwest’ was charted on decks.de for over six weeks in the main house charts on the nr. 1 and 2 spot. Two repressings have been pressed of their releases.

Next to producing music Esther is spinning records and she also is a collector of rare vinyl. Esther’s style of music cannot really be captured in one phrase. She mixes the new and the old, the rare, the deep & the raw, never compromising the groove, in one sexy onward moving flow. To cut it short: this girl knows how to play house & techno music.
